I never played Grim Fandango when it was first released in 98’, and curiosity got the better of me when I bought this remastered copy on sale with little knowledge of the title. I must admit that I sincerely missed out on a brilliant adventure game that still holds up to this day and I am glad that I got to try it many years after Manny and the rest made their debut.
Grim Fandango’s most charming features are absolutely the characters and personalities met throughout the game’s vibrant and colourful story, full of witty and clever writing. This is further complemented by a cast of great voice actors, producing a voice acting performance that to this day rivals games that are out on the market right now, let alone back in 98.
However, despite all this I do not think that this game is flawless. I must admit that many of the puzzles in the game has stomped me, perhaps resulting from my limited experience in old-school puzzle adventure games that are known for their difficulty and lack of hand-holding. I felt that some solutions to the game’s puzzles were far-fetched and not very clear, sometimes requiring the player to perform an action that made little to no sense given the context. This made for moments of frustration when out of desperation, the only method of progression was to find helpful hints online. This, of course, was easy to do due to the game’s reputation, being many gamer’s beloved classic they grew up with. I can only feel for the generation that had to figure this stuff out on their own.
Overall, Grim Fandango is definitely a must-play for anyone intrigued. The characters and story is unique and engaging and complete with outstanding performance from the voice acting cast. The puzzles are difficult, reminiscent of classics from the same era, but so are they fantastically rewarding once solved.
